Exploring the
8 Limbs of
Yoga

*This weeklong intensive counts as 15 hours towards the Laughing River Yoga 300hr Teacher Training Program.

Dive into the ocean of Yoga through the wisdom of the Eight Limbs, which provide a comprehensive roadmap into deeper states of being (and ultimately, liberation) through quieting the mind.

This weeklong intensive will explore the 8 Limbs of Yoga as presented in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, a seminal text of the Yoga tradition. The 8 limbs are:

1) Yama (Restraints)

2) Niyama (Observances)

3) Asana (Seat/Posture)

4) Pranayama (Breath Control)

5) Pratyahara (Withdrawal of the Senses)

6) Dharana (Concentration)

7) Dhyana (Meditation)

8) Samadhi (Absorption)

Each day will center on one or several limbs, explored through group practice, discussion, and experiential activities. The sessions will progress so that the limbs become integrated rather than viewed as distinct parts.

This intensive will be presented through the relevance of modern practitioners. Students will learn the historical and traditional applications of the Yoga Sutras, with emphasis on adaptation in a modern context. Through body-based and subtle practices, students will learn techniques to support daily life and practice. Yoga teachers and students alike are invited to participate.

Students who take this intensive will:

  • Practice chanting key sutras in Sanskrit

  • Understand the goal and purpose of Yoga according to Patanjali and why this matters today

  • Explore how body-based and breath practices influence the mind

  • Understand the obstacles of the mind that lead to suffering

  • Learn how to sit comfortably

  • Move from more gross to subtle practice

  • Deepen their meditation practice

  • Gain clarity on the historical and traditional application of the Yoga Sutras and 8 Limbs

This weeklong intensive will be held in-person at the Chace Mill.
