We’re honored to have Mary Alice Mckenzie as part of our yoga studio community. Mary Alice is our currently featured student. Here’s a little about why we think she’s so special. Mary Alice participated in an interview we conducted to get to know her better and here’s what we learned (see below). Thank you, Mary Alice, for bringing such beautiful energy into the studio!
1. How long have you been practicing yoga?
I took my first yoga class in 2002 during a stressful time in my life. Although I really appreciated the classes I took at that time, I did not become a regular class participant until about five years later when I started coming to Laughing River for Emily’s Yin class.
2. Why do you practice yoga?
For me, now, practicing yoga has become a way of life. I love the way practicing yoga has changed the way I think about the ups and downs that life brings to us all. Learning how to differentiate self from thoughts, feelings, and the perception of others has been a significant shift that has come both from the Yoga Teacher Training Program and from practicing yoga at Laughing River.
3. Why is Laughing River Yoga your studio of choice?
I come to Laughing River because the quality of teaching is just so amazing. The studio offers different types, levels and styles of yoga. However, each teacher demonstrates how much they care about those they teach. There is nothing commercial about Laughing River and I think that is why it has become such a successful studio. Everything about Laughing River runs consistent with the values of yoga that shows us how to live a balanced and harmonious life.
4. What do you do when you’re not doing yoga?
When I am not practicing yoga for myself, I teach Chair Yoga in assisted living communities and in nursing homes. I also provide consulting services for the not for profit sector and spend some time on a few boards and commissions.
5. What is your favorite hobby, food, or art?
I love to spend time with my family and to read and stay physically active in different ways.
