Class Descriptions

There are as many types of yoga as there are people. It’s important to find the right style(s) for you. Here is what we offer:
Anusara
Anusara Yoga is a graceful, flowing practice. Based on Anusara principles, this practice blends the spirit and expression of the heart with the science of bio-mechanics and alignment. It is a vinyasa-style practice that emphasizes heart-opening and the correct positioning for each yoga pose. There is an an intention to bring the lessons learned in yoga class into daily life.
Jivamukti
Jivamukti is a Sanskrit word meaning “liberation while living”. Jivamukti Yoga is one of the nine internationally recognized styles of Hatha Yoga. Its distinct style weaves together the physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of Yoga to form a deep and holistic experience on the mat. Each Jivamukti class offers an invigorating form of vinyasa (flow) practice that is infused with inspiring teachings derived from the ancient Yogic texts, music, breath work, chanting, meditation and relaxation. Some Yoga experience is recommended to attend drop in Jivamukti classes but adventuresome beginners are always welcome.
Kripalu
The Kripalu experience is centered around a student knowing his/her self. Classes utilize postures, flows, breath work, centering, and relaxation as a way to look within and observe the rising and falling of physical sensations, emotions and thoughts. Through fully experiencing and observing physical, mental and emotional experience without judgment, blockages begin to dissolve, energy is freed, and healing can happen on all levels. Students walk away with a greater understanding and acceptance of their self. Over time this translates into increased mental clarity, compassion and joy in life.
Laughing River Yoga offers two levels of Kripalu Classes: Gentle and Moderate
Kundalini
Kundalini yoga is called the yoga of awareness. It directly affects one’s consciousness, develops intuition, and unleashes the unlimited creative potential that exists within every human being. Each class consists of a specific sequence of breath work, mantra, mudra, asana, and meditation, also called a kriya. Kriyas focus on a particular aspect of the human body, such as the spine or the glandular system, and this focus changes depending on the class. You will leave class feeling a strong sense of self, dignity, and grace. All levels welcome.
Morning Flow
Awaken with this warming flow. Begin your day with an energizing, balancing practice that leads to new space and freedom. The class begins slowly with a focus on the breath and eases into dynamic movement and posture inquiries.
Restorative
Restorative Yoga is a gentle, therapeutic practice that allows the body to open at it’s own pace. Using props for support, we hold poses for a long time without effort or force. This allows the body to relax deeply while the mind rests. You will leave with an expanded awareness of your body’s unique holding patterns.
Slow Yoga
Slow Yoga allows time for you to notice what’s going on in your body as you go into a yoga pose, to explore what feels best and make adjustments—not to perfect the pose, but to find your own best expression of it in that moment. This is low-impact yoga designed to increase body awareness—a key factor in preventing injury as we age—as well as strength, flexibility, and balance.
Vajra
Vajra Yoga & Meditation integrates Buddhist meditation and philosophy directly into the practice of Hatha yoga. This approach awakens us to the inseparability of body, mind and heart, and educates the mind to explore the space that opens within us through regular practice of yoga postures. By nurturing this awareness and experience of the body as the home for the mind, we can arrive at a state of health, well being and self-knowledge regardless of the condition of our physical bodies. Class includes sitting meditation practice.
Vinyasa
Vinyasa yoga is the practice of consciously linking the movement of the body to the movement of the breath. Classes are a moving meditation during which the breath acts as the seamless connection between all experiences.
We offer three levels of vinyasa yoga: power (vigorous), regular (moderate to vigorous), and gentle.
Yin
Yin Yoga is a quiet, contemplative practice during which we hold yoga poses in a relaxed position for 3-5 minutes. The long holds access and open the connective tissues of the body. This frees up blocked energy and improves flexibility. Yin practice is ideal preparation for meditation as it both calms the nervous system and makes sitting for long periods of time more comfortable. It is also the perfect balance to a more active lifestyle.
Yoga Dance
Yoga Dance begins with Kundalini type yoga warm-ups to awaken energy. You will move fluidly from warm-ups into a standing pose for some guided movement inquiry and eventually into a free-form prana-flow, you’ll find yourself in an intuitive movement meditation before an ambient savasana. Dynamically enhance your range of motion, break through physical and energetic blockages, boost cardiovascular strength, and create a more positive relationship with your body while you open your mind and let your spirit soar.
Yoga on the River
Take your yoga practice outdoors to the Winooski River. Meet at the studio for class and we’ll walk outside together. Dress in layers and bring a beach towel to place under your mat. Inward focus and the river will calm your nerves. Fresh air, pranayama and yoga postures will invigorate your body. In the event of rain, class is held inside the studio with a focus on nature.
