This experience begins with feel-good yoga warm-ups to energize the body and mind. We will focus on grounding energy considering the strong gravitational pull of the full moon. Listening to the inner rhythm of the breath and the music as guides, we’ll move fluidly from warm-ups into standing. Here there will be some guided movement inquiries led. Eventually we’ll move into a free-form prana-flow. Though it may be tough to imagine now, you’ll find yourself in an intuitive movement meditation, liberating the creative life-force, prana. This is followed by an ambient savasana to integrate. Dynamically enhance your range of motion, break through physical and energetic blockages, boost cardiovascular strength, and create a more positive relationship with your body while you open your mind and heart. This is not a technical dance. There is no choreography, rather an experience in listening and letting go, a meditation in motion.

Asana practice is just the beginning.  In fact the purpose of Asana (postures) is to prepare the body for sitting meditation.  Yet, due to our busy lives, meditation practice often gets left out.  This workshop will provide the experience of yoga asana, sitting meditation, walking meditation and time for quiet. Participants will be asked to observe silence in order to provide a container in which one can experience the calm presence of mindful awareness. No prior experience is necessary.  Miv will provide plenty of instruction and guidance, as well as time for questions and sharing.  This is a wonderful opportunity to enrich your yoga practice and your understanding of meditation.

mivcapenewyearsAbout Miv London:
Miv London delights in sharing the transformative practices of yoga and meditation with others.  Miv began practicing yoga over 20 years ago, and has recently completed a 200-hour teaching training with Emily Garrett and Sofi Diloff. She has been a student and practitioner of meditation in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition since 1999.
In her professional life, Miv has worked as a clinical psychologist for 30 years. Currently she is on the staff of Counseling and Psychiatry Services of the University of Vermont.  She is founder and coordinator of the UVM Mindfulness Practice Center, which offers education and practice of mindfulness meditation to the UVM community.  She has a particular interest in application of meditation and yoga for emotional healing.
Miv’s teaching is characterized by warmth, kindness, and gentle humor.  She is endlessly inspired by the healing power of compassionate self-awareness.

Sacred in the Round: Hoop Yoga with Pippa Dorfman

What is Sacred in the Round?

Over the last three years Pippa has developed a specific style of asana practice that combines two forms of artful movement (hoop dance and Yoga poses) into one unique fluid vinyasa practice.  Taking ancient wisdom from Yogic philosophy and practice as well as from the Native American worldview of the hoop as a representation of the circle of Life, her offering has evolved into a Hoop Yoga & Meditative Dance workshop.

One does not need to know how to “hoop dance” at all since this class focuses on using the hoop as a constant prop for balancing, strengthening, and expanding postures rather than spinning it around the body.

In the first portion of class you will be guided gracefully through a hoop-yoga asana practice – with optional variations in many postures so that you may decide for yourself where your personal “edge” is.  In the latter portion of the workshop we will awaken from Savasana to the sounds of exotic music inspiring each one of us to explore the energetic depths within and use the hoop as a means to radiate this discovery outward.  In the dance portion of this workshop we learn to use the negative space around us and the hoop as an intimate dancing partner.

About Pippa Dorfman:

hoopdancerPippa Dorfman, Kripalu certified Yoga teacher since 2005, has taught in three different countries (including: Ambaji House of Wellbeing in Byron Bay, NSW Australia; CCS-Rau, Moshi volunteer center, Tanzania East Africa; Ipswich YMCA, Massachusetts USA; and most currently in studios across northern Vermont).  Pippa believes she is just as much a student of Yoga  as she is teacher and is dedicated to empowering others to find their own Yoga practice.

Pippa teaches from a place of intuitive awareness- of the energy in the group, the varying levels of practitioners present, and of the asana vinyasa involved- in each class.  Kripalu Yoga teaches us that safety in alignment, coordination of breath with movement, riding the waves of sensation, and finding your “edge” in each posture are of utmost importance in one’s practice.

Pippa’s classes are always based on the sacred circle and she feels grateful to be able to share the gift of Yoga with others since this is a lifelong journey for all of us; no matter how open our body is in each moment or where our state of mind has wandered to, we are all in this together.

“With touch, progress is very fast” – Pattabhi Jois
This hands-on assist workshop is open to teachers and students interested in exploring safe and intelligent adjustments for yoga asana (postures). In three hours, we will demystify the underlying principles of the yoga assist while strengthening an understanding of energetics that inform our asana practice and the student-teacher relationship. We’ll delve beyond basics and examine powerful assists that can guide students deeper into their experience. A skillful touch has the power to transport yoga practitioners to a whole new level of awareness. What could take years to understand in the body on its own, could just take one precise, effective, supportive enhancement from a teacher. Whether you’re a teacher looking to enhance your service to others, or a student curious about the “why” behind physical adjustments, this workshop will shed new light on the art of assisting.

About Jamie Russell Villanueva:
“I have been practicing yoga on and off for nearly a decade but not until 2010 did I consistently make room for it in my life. Since then, yoga has become my lifestyle. My personal and professional yoga practice continues to evolve as I discover and embrace yoga as a method of self-regulation and transformation. After diving into yoga, myself and those near me, noticed positive physical and mental changes; it is these gifts that I like to share with my students. I enjoy teaching a light hearted, upbeat and physical class. I subtly weave Buddhist-inspired philosophy into my classes giving students a full mind and body experience. In addition to yoga, I love hiking and snowboarding the mountains of Vermont and California with my husband Nico.” From  www.jamievillanueva.com

at Laughing River Yoga with Jane Jarecki Lanza

This class is offered on the New Year for deep relaxation and conscious new beginnings. There will be candlelight and soft music. Restorative Yoga is a gentle, therapeutic practice that allows the body to open at it’s own pace. Using props for support, we hold poses for a long time without effort or force. This allows the body to relax deeply while the mind rests. You will leave with an expanded awareness of your body’s unique holding patterns and a new sense of freedom, from the inside-out.
