What is Pelvic Floor Yoga?

Pelvic floor yoga utilizes yoga poses and breathing techniques to directly address the health of the pelvic floor.  Although often overlooked, the interplay of the muscles in the pelvic floor can be a key component in the overall health of the hips and knees, spine, organs, breathing capacity and nervous system.  Located at the base of the spine, between the sitting bones, tailbone and pubic bone, the pelvic floor creates the foundation for your whole body.  A deep layer of muscles in the body, working with it requires a lot of awareness!  Through pelvic floor yoga you will cultivate the awareness and tools needed to work toward healing and health.

How is it different from kegels?

Kegels are a contraction of the vaginal wall.  Depending on your situation, performing kegels may or may not be part of your pelvic floor therapy.  Your pelvic floor could be too tight, too loose or healthy and how this manifests between the front, back and both sides is unique.  Through pelvic floor yoga you will learn how your pelvic floor is working as a whole as well as specific exercises to address your unique situation.

How can Pelvic Floor Yoga help me?

Pelvic Floor yoga will increase your awareness and understanding of your pelvic floor.  It will give you tools to take ownership of your own health and well-being while you increase comfort, vitality and confidence.

Is this only for women?

No.  Pelvic Floor Yoga benefits all genders and all sexes.  Everyone can benefit from increased breath capacity, awareness and a more stable foundation.

About Emily:

Emily Garrett is a yoga teacher located in Burlington, VT where she owns and directs Laughing River Yoga.  She leads teacher trainings, workshops and retreats and teaches both individual and group classes.  Her one on one sessions emphasize meeting the individual where they are while providing opportunities for growth.  Grounded in a strong foundation of alignment, breath anatomy, and compassionate listening Emily has been guiding individuals toward greater health and awareness for the last 16 years.  When she was 17, Emily experienced a fall that injured her pelvis and began a lifelong journey of healing.  She found that what helped her most after her injury was yoga and devoted the next 23 years of her life to study, with an emphasis on the pelvis.  After birthing her second child, she was initiated into a life changing journey with the pelvic floor.  Although Emily had worked with the pelvic floor for years, it wasn’t until she began seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist that she began to understand what was really happening in her own body.  Together with her Pelvic Floor PT, her yoga practice and advanced training with Pelvic Floor Yoga Teacher Leslie Howard, Emily began to unravel the mystery of her own pelvic floor and heal on a very deep level.  The work has been so transformative that Emily is passionate about sharing it with others.

Testimonials:

“Working with Emily was a true gift.  I gained amazing body and breath understanding, which has really improved my pelvic floor pain. While working with Emily, she supported me in finding new ways of feeling my body, came up with new postures to practice at home, and helped me understand the anatomy of the pelvic floor which allowed me to visualize and bring breath into specific areas. Emily is a special practitioner, healer, and her grounded energy was just what I needed. My pelvic floor pain and overall body feels much better from my work with Emily. “ – Carmen M.

“Emily began each lesson with tailored restorative stretches that met me exactly where I needed to be. I’ve begun to free my hips and learned how to better self accept, honor my body wisdom, train my bladder and strengthen and relax my Pelvic Floor.  Another bonus has been cultivating some peace and patience. “- Jane L.

Pelvic Floor Yoga is most effective when we work one on one.  The first session works mainly with breathing, learning your history and getting a sense of your pelvic floor and how it is functioning.  The following sessions continue to work on what we discover while giving you techniques to practice at home.  Emily does encourage you, if possible, to have a session or more with a Pelvic Floor PT before you see her. This will increase the effectiveness of the sessions.  All sessions are held at Laughing River Yoga in Burlington, VT.

The rate is $70 per hour.
